The scented dice in L’Éveil des Sens are inspired by the centuries-old Amazigh tradition of skhab, a fragrant craft passed down through generations across North Africa.
For centuries, women have worn skhab as scented necklaces and hair ornaments. More than jewelry, skhab became a personal signature, releasing its delicate fragrance with the warmth of the body.
To honor this beautiful tradition, I reimagined skhab as mahjong dice.
Each die is still crafted using traditional artisanal techniques from a fragrant blend of aromatic ingredients that may include cloves, saffron, nutmeg, patchouli, rosewater, ambergris, and musk. The mixture is carefully shaped by hand, left to dry naturally for several days, and finished with its painted dots.
Long before the first tile is drawn, these dice introduce a quiet ritual of fragrance to the mahjong table, connecting every game to a centuries-old North African tradition.
